The Tanjore school of painting originated under the patronage of the Maratha rulers of Thanjavur, in the 17th century, and thrived over the years. These were originally painted on wood and depicted deities surrounded by ornate patterns embossed intricately. These paintings typically had gold and silver foil work, as well as semi-precious stones inlaid into the design.
